Service planning and improvement is one of the main use cases for patient data, helping providers, system leaders and policy makers forecast demand for sevices, drive improvements in services, support commissioning and understand health trends.

However, there remains a lack of research focusing specifically on the use of data for planning (rather than secondary uses generally speaking, which includes both planning and research).

This means there is an opportunity to undertake research specifically focused on the public’s current understanding of how their data is used for planning, what their expectations are in relation to what uses of data are acceptable, what they want to know about the use of data for planning, how they feel about example use cases from current practice, and what language should be used to use to explain data for planning.

We are seeking support from an external contractor to:

  • Conduct surveys and interviews/workshops to understand public attitudes on this topic
  • Draft a brief report that sets out the findings of the research, including current understanding of and expectations around data use and what examples/use cases resonate with people

We anticipate the project will run from early January to late March 2024.

This project is the first part of a two-stage programme, to be commissioned separately. Following on from this first phase of the project, the plan is to create resources to support conversations about the use of data for planning, based on the findings of this research.

More information can be found in the project brief below. The deadline for submitting a proposal is 17:00 on 17th November 2023.
