We are seeking a new Independent Chair of our Steering Group who can bring strategic insight, influence, and advocacy skills to this high-profile advisory role.
You’ll lead a diverse, expert advisory group that supports UPD’s mission — while also acting as an ambassador and advocate for UPD’s work. You’ll help shape the external narrative around patient data, promote transparency and public dialogue, and support the Head of UPD with light-touch strategic guidance.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to shaping the future of health data policy in the UK and internationally — from a fully independent, advisory position.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who can:
- Use their professional standing and networks (e.g. media, policy, health, data, or public life) to advocate for UPD’s work and open doors to strategic opportunities.
- Provide light-touch support and guidance to the Head of UPD, acting as a sounding board for strategic direction.
- Chair meetings of the Steering Group effectively, setting a positive and inclusive tone and fostering an independent, ethical and forward-looking culture.
- Promote UPD’s mission through external engagement, such as public speaking, contributing to blogs or op-eds, or supporting key stakeholder relationships as agreed with the Head of UPD (dependent on interest/capacity).
This role is for you if you:
- Have senior-level experience in fields such as public policy, health and care, data governance, media, advocacy, or civil society.
- Are a trusted, independent voice who can guide a team without holding formal governance responsibilities.
- Understand the importance of public trust and transparency in health data.
- Are passionate about shaping how patient data is used to benefit society — and ensuring that use is always publicly accountable.
Time commitment
Up to 0.5 days per month, including preparation and chairing of quarterly Steering Group meetings and occasional support for UPD’s strategic outreach and communications.
Renumeration
This is not a paid position, however reasonable expenses will be covered.
