Understanding Patient Data is pleased to share that we have published an animation created as a result of our What Words To Use project.
This project focused on exploring the best language to use when explaining Secure Data Environments and Trusted Research Environments to the public. The animation was produced in collaboration with Brickwall, who also produced UPD's existing animations.

This animation offers an independent, non-organisation specific resource that can be used by anyone to explain SDEs/TREs in an evidence-based way that has been co-created with the public and checked with professionals working in this space.
We also have a social media version which captures the second half of the animation, which is short enough that it can be used in reels, shorts, etc. It is linked below on the UPD Youtube Channel, please let us know if you would like access to a downloadable version so that you can implement it in your own organisation’s social media accounts if you wish.

Both videos are offered under a Creative Commons license, so we encourage organisations, SDEs and TREs to utilise them on their own website and in their own resources – you don’t need our permission but it would be great to know if you are choosing to use it so drop us an email at hello@understandingpatientdata.org.uk
We also have versions where the voiceover and subtitles have been removed so that if you have specific edits you’d like to make, such as having a specific regional accent for your area or adding organisational branding, you can do this while keeping the same visuals. Please get in touch with us if this is something you’d like to discuss.
We have shared the launch of the animation on our social media channels (X and LinkedIn), and we would greatly appreciate your support in raising awareness of it. Feel free to forward this on to any colleagues or stakeholders that you think would also be interested in these resources.
As a reminder, we have also published the web resource which forms the most detailed information resource of this project, as recommended by our research participants.

While the animation serves as a short, engaging and accessible explainer, we know that some people are interested in understanding SDEs/TREs in more detail. This webpage expands on the animation topics as well as giving examples of specific SDEs and TREs. We are still working on expanding this page with information about, for example, the Five Safes Framework and case studies.
If you have suggestions of additional resources that would be helpful to explain SDEs and TREs, please let us know.
Thank you for any and all support you have provided to this project and to the team ????
