A major change is coming to how health data is governed across Europe. Join us for EHDS Unpacked to understand what the European Health Data Space (EHDS) is, why it matters internationally, and what it means for the UK.

The EHDS is set to transform how health data is accessed and used across Europe.
It aims to make it safer, simpler and more consistent to use health data across EU countries – for the care of individuals, research, and improved policy making. Even though the UK isn’t in the EU, this still matters. Standards set in Europe often shape global expectations – from how data is shared to what “good” transparency and trust practices look like.
Understanding Patient Data is offering a two‑part webinar series to cut through the complexity and explain:
- What the EHDS actually is and why it’s a big deal
- What it means for people, researchers and health systems in the UK
- How global shifts – including AI – make understanding the EHDS essential
- Where the major opportunities lie, from trusted research environments to cross‑border collaboration
If you care about patient data, public trust, research, innovation or policy, register here to get ahead of the curve.

EHDS Unpacked Part One: What Europe’s health data future means for the UK
1pm - 3pm GMT, 23 April 2026
The first of two sessions will give attendees a structured and accessible introduction to the European Health Data Space. Delivered through an impressive line-up of UK experts, the session will explain why the EHDS matters for the UK, and what new standards, expectations, and cross-border research requirements are emerging from Europe. It will explore real-world implications, from what it means for people, researchers and health systems in the UK to how global shifts – including AI – make understanding the EHDS essential.
We are delighted to be joined by keynote speakers, Professor Andrew Morris, Chief Executive of HDR UK, and Tim Hubbard, Director of ELIXIR, to open the session.
-
Andrew Morris, CEO of HDR UK, is an internationally recognised leader in health data science and a practising clinician, known for championing responsible data use, national research infrastructure and UK-wide collaboration.
-
Tim Hubbard, Director of ELIXIR and Professor of Bioinformatics at King’s College London, is a pioneer in genome analysis, having led major initiatives including Ensembl, GENCODE and the 100,000 Genomes Project. Together, their long-standing experience across research, digital health and largescale data innovation, brings a thorough and accessible perspective on what the EHDS could mean for the UK.

EHDS Unpacked Part Two: Global lessons for building a trusted health data space
10am - 12pm GMT, 12 May 2026
A second EHDS Unpacked webinar will share a set of real examples from countries that are reshaping how they use health data and how they are preparing for the European Health Data Space. Together, we’ll explore what their experiences can teach the UK – especially when it comes to building public confidence, working across borders, and dealing with the practical and cultural challenges that come with change.
With insights from international colleagues who are directly involved in this work, the webinar will spotlight the steps these countries are taking, what they’re finding difficult, and what is helping them move forward. These perspectives will help the UK – and other countries outside the EU – understand which ideas might translate well into their own context, where potential pitfalls lie, and how learning from others can support better long‑term planning.
We have the pleasure of being joined by Doctor Henrique Martins as keynote for the second session.
-
Doctor Henrique Martins is a leading European authority on digital health and health-system transformation. An internal medicine specialist and one of Portugal’s first Chief Medical Informatics Officers, he served seven years as President of Shared Services of the Ministry of Health, the national digital health agency, and co-chaired the EU eHealth Network. With unmatched insight into national, European and international digital health ecosystems, Martins brings a unique perspective to help unpack the themes explored in this webinar.
